Steel Slag and Slag Treatment Process
Cooling: Steel slag and slag are in a high-temperature molten state during the smelting process, so they need to be cooled after high-temperature smelting to solidify them for subsequent processes such as crushing and screening. Usually they are treated by air cooling or water cooling. Air cooling is slow, and the cooled slag and slag are usually crystalline or semi-crystalline, forming a larger grain structure, which is generally used in the construction field, such as road foundation or concrete aggregate. Water cooling is fast, usually forming a glassy or amorphous structure, which is often used as an additive for cement or concrete to improve the strength of concrete.
Crushing: The cooled slag blocks are large, and they need to be crushed into smaller particles by a crusher for subsequent processing. For medium-sized steel slag and slag that are smaller but still larger after primary crushing, further secondary crushing is required. Different crushing equipment is selected according to the particle hardness, crushing particle size requirements and output requirements.
Screening: The crushed material is screened by a vibrating screen to classify it according to particle size. Large particles may need to be further crushed, while small particles can enter the next processing stage.
Magnetic separation: Steel slag contains a large amount of iron elements. Magnetic separation equipment can separate the metallic iron from the non-metallic parts. Magnetic separator is one of the key equipment in steel slag processing, used to recover high-value metals.
Separation and flotation: In some cases, processing plants may use flotation equipment to further separate useful minerals, especially in slag processing. Flotation uses chemicals and bubbles to separate different mineral components.
Fine grinding and pulverization (optional): If the processed steel slag or slag needs to be used as a construction material (such as cement admixture or roadbed material), it needs to be further finely ground into powder, usually using a ball mill or vertical mill.
Storage and reuse: The processed steel slag and slag can be stored in a cool place and can be used for different purposes, such as steel slag can be used for road construction or cement production, while slag is often used in cement and concrete production.
